A 19th Century French ‘conscience’ jar, turned into a lamp, in an ochre coloured glaze.
‘Conscience’ jars were used in the 15th century by monks who would travel to villages collecting oil for the poor in these vessels, traditionally carried by donkeys using rope which would be threaded through the handles. Each household would donate an amount of oil according to their conscience.
In good antique condition.
Newly re-wired with a light brown twisted cord flex and UK plug. PAT tested.
