Jug attributed to Geoffrey Whiting
A tall jug with a wide rim in a tenmoku glaze with thumbed imprint decoration.
Attributed to British studio potter Geoffrey Whiting (1919-1988).
Whiting initially studied architecture but developed an interest in pottery when he met the village potters in India during the Second World War. On his return to England, he began teaching himself pottery and found inspiration in Bernard Leach’s ‘A Potter's Book’, published in 1940. He set up workshops first in Worcestershire and then Canterbury in the 1970s and became known as one of the finest exponents of the 'Leach Tradition', creating pottery with simple forms and natural colours found in early Korean and Chinese ceramics.
A chip on the spout has been previously painted in a colour to match the glaze, as shown in photos. Makers mark stamped on the base
